Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by both her mother and grandmother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Between two work and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she quit school. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing. She became the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
